Wildlife at Settlers Run

Settlers Run is an area with a very diverse range of wildlife. We have a good habitat and a great neighbour in the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne.
The revegetation works of the golf course involved planting around 10,000 trees and several hundred thousand shrubs, native grasses, hedges, herbs and aquatic species. The golf course strengthens habitat links to surrounding areas and throughout the site.
The revegetation of the golf course involved the latest bushland revegetation techniques, and the process has been carefully managed both during and post construction.

Water Management

In 2011, Settlers Run won an award for Integrated Water Management. The citation for the award included:
Water-saving methods were very important and a Water Sensitive Urban Design was used for the benefit of the community as well as the golf course.
Under a world-first pilot project for golf course sustainability, water usage at the development’s on-site golf course is completely sustainable. Approximately 80 per cent of the water used on the course is recycled and supplied by a nearby treatment plant, with remaining 20 per cent coming from water run-off that is collected in an on-site dam.
The design of Settlers Run make it a truly green and environmentally friendly place for residents to live.

Southern Brown Bandicoot

Settlers Run is home to a population of Southern Brown Bandicoots.  Southern Brown Bandicoots are marsupials, meaning they carry their young in a pouch. Like a wombat, their pouch faces backwards so the joeys don’t get covered in dirt from digging!
Southern Brown Bandicoots are omnivorous, mainly eating insects, grubs, and truffle-like fungi that grow underground.  As for their habitat, Southern Brown Bandicoots like to hang out in tussocky grasses and shrubs, which provide great cover from prowling predators. They use these long grassy plants to make cosy nests on the ground, which they often line with leaves.
Settlers Run GCC and the Owners Corporation work together through a volunteer wildlife committee to create the ideal habitat and environment for this endangered species.
